SPARK inverter generators — clean, quiet and economical electricity

Do you need safe power for sensitive electronics and smart household appliances, or an exceptionally quiet and portable source of electricity for fieldwork and leisure? SPARK inverter generators represent the pinnacle of modern portable generator technology.

Key features

Unlike classic generators, inverter technology uses a microprocessor that converts the generated current into a pure sine wave of impeccable quality. SPARK generators automatically adjust the engine speed to the actual load (Smart Throttle), which drastically reduces fuel consumption, noise and emissions. If you need a generator for sensitive electronics, home backup power, a solar system, a motorhome or any setting where low consumption and top-quality electricity matter, an inverter generator is an excellent choice.

Buying guide:Why choose a SPARK inverter generator?

Classic generators run at a fixed 3,000 revolutions per minute, regardless of whether you have just one light bulb or a large load connected. SPARK inverter generators work quite differently: using an advanced converter, they produce direct current, which a microcontroller then converts into an exceptionally stable alternating current with a pure sine wave.

Inverter or AVR generator for a construction site?

Important warning: an inverter generator is not the best choice for every working environment.

Inverter generators have many advantages, but we must also point out their limitations. Compared with classic AVR generators, they contain more sensitive electronics and are generally more sensitive to extreme heat, inadequate cooling, dirt and large amounts of dust.

That is why we particularly advise against inverter generators for

  • Very dusty construction sites
  • Intensive cutting and grinding of concrete or metal right next to the generator
  • Work in mud
  • Environments with a lot of sand and fine dust
  • Enclosed and unventilated spaces

For heavy construction work in very dirty environments, a robust classic AVR generator is a considerably more suitable and durable choice.

From our service experienceDust can cost you more than fuel

Inverter generators work excellently if they have proper cooling conditions and a steady supply of clean air. Unfortunately, our service department occasionally receives generators that have been operated in conditions they were not designed for. We have seen generators that were half-buried in mud during use, and generators with air filters completely clogged with sand and construction dust.

Using an angle grinder or other tools that produce large amounts of fine dust right next to a running generator is particularly problematic. The engine needs a lot of air while running. If the generator stands next to a source of dust, the cooling system and air filter can draw in large amounts of this material. A clogged or damaged filtration system leads to poorer cooling and extreme engine wear. In the worst case, engine wear and loss of compression become so severe that repair is no longer economical and the entire engine has to be replaced.

SPARK rule of thumbAlways place the generator on a clean, stable surface and as far away as possible from any direct source of dust.

The second major danger for an inverter generatorOverheating

The electronics of an inverter generator are extremely sensitive to excessive temperatures. So never enclose the generator in a small box, cupboard, shed or any other improvised housing without a professionally designed inlet for cool air and outlet for hot air.

A large amount of heat is produced during operation. If hot air stays around the generator and re-enters the cooling system, the temperature in a small space can rise extremely quickly.

A real case from our service departmentA generator in a "dog kennel"

During one service call-out, we had an unusual case of an inverter generator whose inverter electronics had been damaged twice in a row. After the second repair, we called the customer to check which loads they were connecting. The answer was entirely ordinary: lights, a fridge and a TV. The location also seemed ideal at first glance – the generator was supposedly running outside on a balcony.

After further questions, we found the real cause: because it was an open-frame generator, the customer was worried it would get wet and also wanted to reduce the noise. So they built a small wooden housing around the generator, similar to a dog kennel. The problem was not the rain, the load or the quality of the generator – the problem was cooling. The housing did not provide sufficient airflow. The generator kept drawing in air it had already heated, and the temperature around the electronics climbed to around 50–60 °C. The result was another destructive failure of the inverter electronics.

How do you correctly position aninverter generator?

For your generator to run flawlessly for many years, it should always operate:

  • Outdoors
  • On a stable, dry and clean surface
  • With enough free space around the air inlets and outlets
  • Away from any direct source of dust or dirt
  • Protected from rain and snow in a way that does not restrict airflow
  • So that hot exhaust gases cannot re-enter the cooling system

Safety warningBecause of the risk of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, never use the generator in a house, garage, basement or any other enclosed space – even if doors or windows are open!

General rules for loading and maintenance

Pure sine wave
SPARK inverter generators deliver a 100% pure sine wave, which means they are completely safe for heat pumps, pellet stoves, laptops and sensitive controllers.
The golden load rule (30–70%)
Even though engine speed is controlled by a smart system (Smart Throttle), choose the generator so that your average consumption represents between 30% and 70% of its rated power. Running continuously at 90–100% of capacity accelerates wear.
Service life
Inverter generators have air-cooled engines with a service life of around 1,000 operating hours before major work. Oil changes every 50–100 hours and regular valve servicing are key to a long working life.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Inverter generators contain sensitive electronic components and powerful cooling systems that draw in large amounts of air during operation. Fine construction particles, dust from cutting concrete or sand clog the air filters and cooling vents, causing the electronics to overheat or severe mechanical engine wear. Robust AVR generators are far better for such environments.

The inverter module converts energy using power electronic components that generate heat during operation. If the generator runs in an enclosed housing or without airflow, it draws hot air back in. At elevated temperatures (above 50 °C), the inverter electronics fail or are permanently damaged.

The main advantage lies in the quality of the electricity produced. The inverter converts the current into a perfect pure sine wave that is completely safe for sensitive electronics (laptops, heat pumps, TVs). In addition, an inverter generator automatically lowers the engine speed at lower loads, which means less noise and lower fuel costs.

Yes – inverter generators are the best choice for exactly these devices. Modern heat pump and pellet stove controllers contain sensitive microprocessors that require a pure sine wave. Before buying, simply check the starting and running power of your heat pump and choose a suitable model with enough reserve (30–70% average load).

Use the power calculator

Standard unleaded petrol (Eurosuper 95) is used. For lubricating the 4-stroke engine, a quality synthetic or semi-synthetic SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40 engine oil is recommended. Checking the oil level regularly before every start is key to a long service life.
