Generators for agriculture and livestock farming — how to protect farm buildings and supply power automatically?

All generators in the SPARK range are suitable for agriculture — from lightweight portable models for fieldwork to powerful industrial diesel generators. For critical agricultural applications such as robotic milking, poultry rearing and barn ventilation and cooling, however, dedicated industrial generators with an ATS transfer switch for automatic start, combined with an online UPS system (6–10 kVA), are mandatory.

The importance of reliable power in rural areas and the dangers of outages

Farm buildings are almost always located in rural areas, where power grids are more exposed to the weather, voltage fluctuations and frequent outages. In modern agriculture, a power cut is not just a brief inconvenience; it directly endangers animals' lives and causes huge material damage.

With highly automated processes such as poultry rearing and robotic milking, we do not have hours to get back from a distant field and manually connect a backup source. A ventilation failure in an enclosed poultry house can kill the entire flock within 15 to 30 minutes through overheating and suffocation. The same applies to milking robots and milk cooling tanks, where any longer stoppage causes injury to the animals and rejected milk.

Overview table of SPARK models for agriculture

Generator model Type / engine Capacity / type Suitability for farm buildings
SPARK 3200i / 4000i Petrol / inverter Compact portable Fieldwork, lighting, field equipment
SPARK HONDA series Petrol / Honda Rugged field unit Farm tools, workshop, dusty environments
SPARK 12000A / 15000/3 AVR Petrol / diesel (AVR) High-power AVR Farmhouse, machine workshop, pumps
SPARK 27 kVA Baudouin Diesel / Baudouin Industrial + ATS Smaller poultry houses, basic milking robots
SPARK 50 kVA Baudouin Diesel / Baudouin Industrial + ATS Robotic milking, farm buildings
SPARK 88 kVA – 275 kVA Baudouin Diesel / Baudouin Industrial + ATS/BMS Large poultry farms, milk cooling facilities

The dangers of outdated PTO generators (tractor generators)

PTO generators, which in the past were the most common form of protection on farms, have two fatal shortcomings besides time-consuming manual connection:

Slow response

Connecting a tractor generator requires you to be physically present, bring the tractor over and connect it manually, which is not feasible in the critical minutes if you are out in the field or on site.

Imprecise voltage regulation (AVR) and fluctuations

A tractor engine and mechanical drive do not allow perfectly stable revs. If the tractor engine "coughs", when using poorer-quality fuel or under a sudden heavier load, the AVR regulator loses stable frequency and voltage. The voltage can first drop to just 150 V and then immediately jump unpredictably to 300 V or more. Such voltage surges instantly destroy the sensitive control electronics of milking robots, control computers and cooling and ventilation systems.

Overview of SPARK generators for agriculture by application

Because the SPARK range covers all the needs of modern farms, we group generators according to specific application requirements:

Outdoor work, fields and portable loads

For fieldwork and for powering electric fences, mobile pumps, lighting and field tools, SPARK portable petrol generators are ideal:

SPARK 3200i and SPARK 4000i: Highly mobile inverter generators for lighter fieldwork and electronics.

SPARK HONDA 3501 HSB and 7201 HSB AVR: Rugged petrol generators with legendary Honda engines for work in dusty and demanding field conditions.

Petrol generators

Farmhouses, workshops and smaller buildings

For powering an entire farmstead, workshop and basic farm machinery during a grid outage:

SPARK 12000A and SPARK 15000/3 AVR: Powerful petrol and diesel AVR generators for reliable power to single-phase and three-phase loads.

SPARK 15000iA with ATS and SPARK 20000iA: Advanced high-capacity petrol inverter systems with a pure sine wave.

Demanding livestock buildings (poultry houses, cattle farming, milking robots)

For farm buildings with livestock, where automation is vital, we offer dedicated SPARK industrial diesel generators with Baudouin engines and integrated ATS panels:

SPARK 27 kVA and 50 kVA with Baudouin engine: The ideal choice for medium-sized farms with milking robots and smaller poultry houses.

SPARK 88 kVA and 110 kVA with Baudouin engine: Top-tier power for larger poultry farms, intensive cattle farming and complex cooling systems.

SPARK 165 kVA and 275 kVA with Baudouin engine: Solutions for large agricultural cooperatives, processing plants and extensive livestock facilities.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

A PTO generator requires manual connection, which causes a fatal delay if the power fails while you are away. In addition, fluctuations in tractor revs cause voltage spikes (from 150 V to 300 V) that destroy the sensitive electronics of milking robots and ventilation systems.

The ATS (Automatic Transfer Switch) continuously monitors the grid voltage. In the event of a power cut, the ATS automatically starts the SPARK industrial generator within a few seconds and transfers the farm's power supply; when mains power returns, the system switches back and shuts down the generator.

Generators with ATS

Poultry are extremely sensitive to temperature and lack of oxygen. During a power cut, the ventilation and cooling systems stop, which can cause the mass death of livestock through overheating within just 15–30 minutes.

Yes. SPARK industrial diesel generators with Baudouin engines are designed for harsh conditions and two-shift or continuous operation (24/7), with extremely low fuel consumption and high voltage stability.

Industrial generators

The power depends on the number of milking units and the size of the milk cooling tank. Small to medium-sized farms typically use SPARK industrial generators rated from 27 kVA to 50 kVA, which provide enough headroom for the high starting currents of compressors. In addition to the generator, an online UPS system in the 6 to 10 kVA range is also mandatory to stabilise the voltage and bridge a 1- to 3-minute power cut (while the generator starts and stabilises).
